Lute play­er, Sofie Vanden Eynde / IMAGO MUNDI asked Heleen Van Haegenborgh to write 3 tri­o’s for per­cus­sion, lute and voice for a pro­gram with music from Orlandus Lassus, John Cage, John Downland and Tarquinio Merula. With sleep and lace as a cen­tral theme. 

Punto in Aria 1, 2 and 3, the new com­po­si­tions by Heleen Van Haegenborgh fit in seam­less­ly with this.
For the song texts she select­ed a few lines from Marcel Proust that metic­u­lous­ly describe the state between sleep­ing and awake. It zooms in detail on the tran­si­tion­al phase that con­scious­ness, sens­es and spir­it go through. These men­tal dynam­ics and dif­fer­ent tran­si­tion­al phas­es are musi­cal­ly trans­lat­ed into bowed per­cus­sion, glis­san­di in the voice, the chang­ing tex­tures and move­ment in the del­i­cate­ly vul­ner­a­ble met­al per­cus­sion.

Making a com­po­si­tion­al link with lace turned out to be more chal­leng­ing (can you han­dle this con­cept in a more inter­est­ing way than refer­ring to lace with repet­i­tive pat­terns?).
Lute and per­cus­sion, how­ev­er, turned out to be the ide­al instru­ments for a point-by-point and trans­par­ent dia­logue.
The lute and vocals pro­vide a clear thread / foot­ing and the per­cus­sion cre­ates an irreg­u­lar­i­ty in the whim­si­cal lace­work. They were not the sym­met­ri­cal oval table­cloths we know.

Punto in Aria 2

Aussitôt je recou­vrais la vue et j’é­tais bien éton­né de trou­ver autour de moi une obscu­rité, douce et reposante pour mes yeux, mais peut-être plus encore pour mon esprit, à qui elle appa­rais­sait comme une chose sans cause, incom­préhen­si­ble, comme une chose vrai­ment obscure.

Punto in Aria 3

Quand je m’éveil­lais au milieu de la nuit, je né savais même pas au pre­mier instant qui j’é­tais ; j’avais seule­ment dans sa sim­plic­ité pre­mière le sen­ti­ment de l’ex­is­tence comme il peut frémir au fond d’un ani­mal je pas­sais en une sec­onde par-dessus des siè­cles de civil­i­sa­tion, et l’im­age con­fusé­ment entre­vue de lam­pes à pét­role, puis de chemis­es à col rabat­tu, recom­po­sait peu à peu les traits orig­in­aux de mon moi.
